What This Calculator Does
The Pregnancy Due Date Calculator estimates a due date using Naegele's Rule: add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). It also calculates the current gestational age in weeks and days, and provides milestone dates for trimesters, routine scans, and other key points in the pregnancy timeline.
Naegele's Rule and Why It Uses LMP, Not Conception Date
Naegele's Rule (published 1812, still in standard clinical use) adds 9 months and 7 days to the LMP. Pregnancy is conventionally counted from the LMP rather than conception because ovulation and conception date are rarely known precisely, while the LMP date is usually recorded. The result is that 'gestational age' includes approximately 2 weeks before conception actually occurred.
Real-Life Example: Calculating a Due Date
LMP of 15 March 2026. Due date: 15 March + 280 days = 19 December 2026. Current date (28 June 2026) minus LMP = 105 days = 15 weeks exactly. Trimester 1 ends at 13+0 weeks (already passed); Trimester 2 ends at 27+0 weeks (current: 15+0, so in Trimester 2); Trimester 3 begins at 28+0 weeks. The 20-week anomaly scan would be scheduled around 10 August 2026.
Why Due Dates Are Estimates, Not Predictions
Only approximately 4-5% of babies are born on their estimated due date. Approximately 80% are born within 10 days either side. A due date is a central estimate, not a deadline — full term is considered 37-42 weeks, and spontaneous labour between those dates is normal. Individual variation in implantation timing, corpus luteum function, and many other factors means 40-week estimates carry inherent uncertainty.
When Ultrasound Dates Differ from LMP Dates
A dating ultrasound (typically done at 11-14 weeks) measures fetal crown-rump length and may revise the due date. If the ultrasound-estimated date is within 7 days of the LMP-estimated date, the LMP date is usually kept. If the discrepancy is more than 7 days, the ultrasound estimate is generally used, as it directly measures fetal size rather than inferring from menstrual cycle length.
Using the CalcPro Pregnancy Due Date Calculator
Enter the first day of your last menstrual period. The calculator returns the estimated due date, current gestational age, trimester, and key milestone dates. All calculations are estimates — clinical confirmation via dating ultrasound is the standard of care.
